How awesome are the newer versions? I have a copy of CS somewhere in my house, but when I had tried to use it I did not like it very much

I spend 99% of my editing time in CS6 (CS5 also great). I recommend them, but there is a steep learning curve.

Ive self taught myself every program I know. My boyfriend is pushing me to just get the most recent version of "basic photoshop" he has a friend who uses it and swears it is the bomb

Photoshop Elements might be a good place to start, but I find it ties your hands. I would go for the CS6 and get an account on
http://www.lynda.com/ and learn to use it. I actually wrote a book on my lighting and photoshop because a lot of people think lightroom is enough. ;-)

I have a OLD version, Photoshop CS, it's about 8 years old and was $900.00 I think, I see the CS 5 is only a bit over $600.00 now but I see no need to up grade unless you want to edit RAW files directly in photoshop.
