you can do this already, if you look at the credits on the left side of an image. the trouble is with crediting, the system does not really know what person you are looking at and who you want to see next. we give you arrows for each, but also a link their the photo-roll for each person as well. does that help?

do you mean contest votes or votes in general? we are going to be adding a vote graph soon to show how many votes you get per day.

Maybe allowing a comment when a person votes? I also agree with this as I often don't understand why a specific picture would get a low vote, or a high one for that matter. might be interesting. the question is do we eventually add these to the photo or keep them as part of the contest only?

i just found this thread and yes i agree, when i enter a contest i would like to hear what it is about the pic that either fit the criteria or didnt fit the criteria as to why i won, lost, placed etc... i know when i'm voting im looking at composition, pose, lighting and use of color (if applicable)
and i would say keep them for the contest only... since what makes a picture absolutely fit or conversely NOT fit a certain contest really might have nothing to do w the overall picture

I like that answer Lexicon and it solves the major issue I was having. I will add this to the to-do list.

Yes, we have a ton of that stuff coming soon! It has been collecting for a while now so we can give some interesting stats on the day we launch it.

Love this idea and it should be easy enough to do. I'll try getting to it early this week.

still waiting for this :)

We send out an email the day any contest is started and the submission period is 7 days. Is that insufficient?

i didn't realize that. that is fine.

We are going to add a Good and Bad voting system for images soon. Those votes will weigh into the POTD calc in some way. Also, if an image sucks, you can always do a crit on it, or even better report it if it is truly awful.

I'm holding back for a bit on such things... I might make people cry. I'll wait for the buttons
sedetweiler

initially we were going to have just a "Like" type of button, but some images are bad and they need to know it. voting will be anonymous and be one vote per image. we will have to watch how it evolves and a few "haters" won't make a difference on a great image.
sedetweiler
also, voting will yield points toward levels for anyone that gives a rip about that little game. :-)
sedetweiler

although, i am still thinking that through, as some images probably are neither a plus or a minus, so I dont want people to push them one way or anther. gotta ponder that more.

I should be a level 20 reality check with henchmen and a sidekick. *Looks around* Ok... just a bit too much but it will happen. I am very critical about even my own work. Sometimes I'd rip my ownself an new arse....

I failed art class and never showed up after.
My main point is that if someone is just "commenting" on something but not really liking it they have the option to make it count or not. The "critique" system is useless for PTOD and most just do it on pictures they like and/or afraid of doing a true critique. No matter what we are all in judgement of our "peers" being anyone on this site from photogs down to stylists. Someone will always look at something and be like "Hmm... I could have done this a different way" then get into a snuff fight. Just as contests are "anonymous" we should have that option to be so anonymous on the work we view.

I have images that deserve a bad vote, but I also have some that I think are ok. the goal with the vote was to help you grow by seeing those things that might be viewed by others as worthy of a vote either way. I am NOT going to use the voting system for the POTD, the goal was to create yet another metric you can use to look at your work from the outsiders perspective. I am probably going to make the results only visible to the image owner as well, so you can learn what you want from it, or ignore it completely. Creating new methods of interaction is yet another goal. Many just browse, and few comment. If they have the ability to show respect or dismay with a single click maybe that will help you to grow, as I am sure it would help me.
this is not a done deal btw, just something I really feel would be interesting.

For my two cents, an aside from pixelfaire's remark on learning about all the factors that go into an image: is there any way to encourage photographers to divulge their techniques? IMNSHO the most beneficial feature of any photography site beyond sharing awesome images is sharing the technical information regarding how they are done.
sedetweiler

you can always ask a specific question and see if you get an answer.
TJA_Bricker

Of course I have done that several times. Thank you for the suggestion.

some people don't login until they are contacted, so ya never know. many of them come in from time to time, so give them a whirl even if they have not been on in a while. this site has not yet really been marketed, so all of the people on here are either testers or friends of testers that came in early when it didn't do much. glad you like the place and keep the ideas coming!

Originally I felt it would be abused as people would just credit friends, but I see people really like the system, so I will implement it.

We can't do bread crumbs that point to a specific spot in a page because of the way the site works (too much ajax). I could store each tab/gallery selection on click as a cookie per user, but frankly that's a lot of work and resource load for little payoff. The prev/next arrows per credit on the photo page will have to do. Or do what I do and open individual photos in a new tab. That way when I'm done viewing it, I don't have to search for my spot.
legioXstudios

How about a theater style viewer? with the ability to comment and such but when the theater is closed you are still on the gallery you were in?
chilly

As mentioned elsewhere, I just added a feature to help address this. When you're on someone's portfolio or on a cascade, hover over a photo. You'll get a link icon in the top right of the photo, and clicking on it will open the photo in a new window or tab. I think that combined with the green browse arrows in the credit section sufficiently handle the issue, yes?

Good feedback. I've considered making critiques completely anonymous in order to encourage people to actually critique instead of just praising. What would you think about that? It's possible that we could still allow you to read a history of that user's critiques, but you wouldn't be able to see who they are. What do you think?
sedetweiler

One thing I really need to do is pound into the head of people that this is not a place for a compliment and 5 stars in all categories. I see so many one word crits with 5 stars, but how to educate/force them to not use it this way? the big difference is that crits don't count towards the POTD calc, and comments do. If they really like an image, leaving a crit and not a comment does not help the owner of the photo get closer to the POTD win.
I was also considering a thumbs-up/thumbs-down on the crit so that useful crits could be notices and maybe even rewarded, where dumb ones can get spotted easier. I was also considering extra credit if they owner of the photo agreed (thumbs-up) with the crit, but no penalty if they didn't as it is a critique after all.
chilly
I want to have it give a warning if the average stars are 4 or higher, just to pound it into people that most photos aren't all 5 stars. I'd also warn if the content of the critique is less than 100 characters. They'd still be able to post it either way, but it'd be an extra step for them.
We could also do thumbs-up/down on comments. Since we don't award points for giving a critique, maybe we give a point if it gets a thumbs up?
nickolasnikolic
Anonymous would be an interesting experiment. I would still do them, but maybe feel a little sad that I don't get social credit for my work. On the other hand, it allows others to say constructive things while not feeling too offensive.
Thumbs up/down is perfect, as it gives more value to the critique through social voting.
I mentioned this in another reply, but trying a minimum character length probably would also help with the quality and content of critiques. Let's say 100 words or 500 characters minimum in critiques, while comments have no minimum.
sedetweiler
i also think that making it so that you could not give 5 stars in all groups as it isn't a praise engine, it is to help people improve and if it already perfect, the critique really isn't helpful right?
chilly
I don't think we should disallow it. Some people might give good critiques and actually feel all 5 stars is warranted on a certain photo. Besides, people would just switch one of the 5 to a 4 if we did that.
-
sedetweiler
I think we can add this pretty easily. I am telling people not to make 100% perfect crits as well as that is what a comment is for. A crit is for something where they can improve. Hard to beat this into their heads for some reason. Moreover, a comment improves their score for a possible POTD, where a crit does not. So, please help me spread the word that a 100% perfect crit isn't helpful to anyone.
TJA_Bricker
Would it be useful to award one point for critiquing an image? Perhaps use an algorithm that either evaluates the text of the additional comment or looks at the distribution of the stars awarded for each category to determine that the critique is not just 100% perfect and then award a point in that case.
sedetweiler
that might be interesting. we used to give points for crits, and we got thing like "Nice!" and so on. People could pound out 10 or so an hour like that. We decided to no longer give points for them until we figure out something that can be consistent and helpful. Until then it is really for those that "get it" and know how to be a good critic.
chilly
I've added the large version of the photo on the overlay, so it should be easier to critique now.
nickolasnikolic
Try requiring that critiques be over 100 words or 500 characters or so? That should take care of short, perfect critiques.
By the way, I second this original post. I also open the image in another window to see it.

I'll add an automatic tool on the control panel as well. Were not interested in "trapping" users and have no issue if they want to leave. Obviously we hope they wouldn't or would provide a reason, but that's up to them.

@chilly I tried to leave once a long time ago because this site is hard to use but couldn't find any button to do so. I emailed support or help to cancel my account but didn't hear back. It would be great if you provide that option so user can delete their account. I've added pictures back on since then and will stick around for a while and wait and see if the members around my area increases and also if the site is easier to use. Thanks. ~ Larry.

I also find it annoying that the parser delete letters in our comment. For the one above I typed in 'added pictures' and it took out the 'ad'.

You keep posting the same requests/issues in multiple spots. :) I added a function we can run to remove user accounts and used it on the josephsamuel user. I'll take a close look later tonight to make sure it worked correctly and if so I'll add a user interface on the control panel so people can self-delete if they want.
Temporarily fixed the missing letter issue... will do a permanent fix tonight.

you can do that now actually. when you click to browse to upload an image, you can use the standard control/shift methods to select multiple images.

it will upload them all into your queue. from there you can give them a title, set 18+ or not, and then finally add any credits to others that might have worked on the image.

Personally I think that would drive me nuts with all of those open windows. Is there something we could add to the overlay that would help?
chilly
If you're using a tabbed browser you can just middle click and it'll open the link in a new tab. Shift-click will open in a new window. This will bypass the user preview screen that we use.
LMphotography
I just have the habit of checking out profiles of people I am speaking with, and hate when I click it and it navigates away from the chat window, or how about a "pop out" chat window that would stay open but if you click a profile/link it would use the other window?
chilly
It doesn't navigate away from the chat window, though. It opens the user preview overlay, which sits on top of the chat window. Does middle clicking work? I generally prefer allowing users to determine when they want new windows/tabs rather than forcing the behavior.
LMphotography
@Chilly Understandable. it does open the overlay, but if you want to view port it will bring you to there "page"..
sedetweiler
maybe an icon on the overlay to open it in a new window for those that like that functionality and don't prefer to use the browser controls to force a new window?
LMphotography
and I just did it again :P its when someone posts in the "attention whoring" and you click on them it brings up there profile, does not do the overlay when on the chat page.
sedetweiler
they can link to many things from the attention whoring, like another site, their profile, a group, an event, etc. there is no plans to make that an overlay at this time. however, we might do it for the name area, but not for the link at the bottom.

What happens if a photo is shown in more than one publication? Does this only apply to photos that are specifically shot for that publication? Would a publication work like a normal user, with its own photos and galleries, or should it simply be a text field with auto-complete?
sedetweiler
I was thinking much like fan pages on facebook a user could create a publication, studio, etc and then request credit or add images/descriptions for their focus, but it would be managed by the creating user, not an stand-alone account.
