Save yourself some frustration... take note of our DISCUSSION SUBSCRIPTIONS. I recently rewrote our entire commenting system to closely mirror the functionality of Facebook's system. The benefit of the new discussion system is that we can maintain it in one place and it updates across the entire site. This is especially useful when we need to add a feature or fix a bug, but it also makes your experience with the site more consistent (ie easier to understand).

Look at the top of this discussion area. You'll see a checkbox that subscribes you to new comments. If you check that box, you'll get an email and site notice for NEW discussion threads only, not responses.

To get a response notification, you need to be the original author for that thread or have responded to it. For example, if @Cambriea responds to this new discussion, I'll get a notification. If @NatalieMorris then responds after that, both Cambriea and I would receive a notification. Subscribers would only get a notification for my initial post.

To make life easier on everyone, we automatically subscribe them to their portfolio, credited photos, groups (everyone is a member of our official groups), any contests they enter, and any awards they win. If you get annoyed by notifications for new comments in our official groups, just visit those groups and uncheck the subscribe button.

If you don't want to receive ANY notification emails, go to your control panel and uncheck the appropriate checkbox. You can also unsubscribe from specific types of email at the bottom of the email itself, but be aware that unsubscribing from all discussion emails means you'll not get an email if people post on any of your photos or portfolio.

What about those links on the thread? Permalink allows you to link directly to a specific thread. Reply allows you to respond to that thread (better than posting an entirely new discussion thread if you're responding to a specific comment). Delete removes your comment entirely (mods can remove ANY comment for violations, otherwise you can just remove your own or if you're the original poster you can remove the entire thread).

As always, if you think of an improvement to this system, please let us know.

It is there to give some feedback since a lot of folks just look and never comment. We have a lot of things coming that use these votes.

A GM feature you should know about... EVENT AND CASTING CALL NOTIFICATIONS. Our event and casting call system will notify everyone within a certain distance of the event. It's now role-specific, too, which means that photographers will only get a notification if at least 1 photographer is desired in the listing (same for models, body painters, etc).

How does this work? First, each user has a location specified in their portfolio (edit your portfolio to change it). Second, each event and casting call has a location specified when you create or edit it. Third, each user has a maximum notification distance set in their control panel (under notifications). By default this is set to 120 miles. If you're only willing to travel 30 miles for an event or casting call, lower this setting. If you'll go anywhere, raise it. Our system will find everyone within their own personal range of the event when it's created and notify them. It sends them an email (assuming they haven't turned off event notification emails in the control panel) and a site notification on our new notification bar.

We think this is a feature that very few other sites have, and it allows you to advertise your event or casting call to all of the appropriate people automatically.

To add an event or casting call, visit the events page (http://www.greenmartini.com/events) and click the green button at the top to add a listing. We hope you enjoy this feature and look forward to your feedback on it so we can improve it even more.

There are other uses we have planned for it and a neutral vote would be completely inconsequential for those as well. I'm pretty sure we're not going to change this unless Detweiler comes up with some application that requires those neutral votes. We do appreciate the feedback, though.

An average image neither deserves praise or ridicule, so neither vote would apply. I personally would find it annoying to have to indicate it was an average image when only an extreme is truly statistically interesting. I don't expect a vote on every image, so the plan is currently to just cover the top and bottom end of the quality metric. However, thanks for taking time to bring it up and keep on brainstorming!

As of right now, all users have been unsubscribed from getting new comment notifications in our official groups. The one exception is this group, the site announcements group. Unfortunately in order to do this, I had to re-add all users to this group, even if they've unsubscribed in the past. Rest assured that if you unsubscribe now it's going to be permanent.

I apologize for making the rash decision to automatically add everyone into the subscriptions for our official groups as well. I didn't think it through completely and obviously it's something that most of you didn't want. I understand not liking large amounts of email coming into your mailbox from a single site. Additionally, in order to help deal with that issue even more, I'll soon be working on email digesting, which means you'll have the option of receiving a single email each day with your notifications instead of one email per notification.

Additionally, the massive amount of email we generated has resulted in a few people wanting to remove their accounts. While disappointed, we understand completely. For now, please send me a private discussion if you want your account removed and I'll do it manually within 24 hours. Once I'm confident my deletion function is working properly, I'll add it onto the control panel so anyone can remove their account if they so desire. Even if you want your account removed, I'd love some feedback explaining why so we can fix any issues in the future. Obviously not necessary, but greatly appreciated.

As always, we appreciate your feedback and hope you'll continue helping improve GM.

Everyone. :)
