Perhaps the subscribe checkbox should be unchecked by default, not the other way around.

It is unchecked by default. As I explained, everyone is automatically subscribed to official groups, their photos, and their portfolio. Everywhere else you look at it'll be unchecked.

FYI, there was a bug that prevented discussion unsubscribe from actually working until 2 minutes ago. It was reported in the bug reporting group and I quickly fixed it, since obviously that'd be a MAJOR problem otherwise. :)

I don't see why everyone is automatically subscribed to official groups. That should be unchecked by default IMHO but it's no biggie.

How do we STOP getting all these RIDICULOUS announcements? I could care about who posts what in EVERY discussion! If I wanted to know, I'd check on my own time - stop flooding my inbox!

Did you read the explanation? Click "Unsubscribe to this type of message" at the bottom of one of the emails or uncheck the box in your control panel.

I know joesephsamuel. Apparently "as it was explained"someone thought automatically subscribing everyone to the official groups is a good idea. So we have to go in on our own and unsubscribe from them ourselves.

I agree. All the checkboxes should be unchecked by default except for what we participated in, e.g. our photos, contests, comments etc.

I've thought this over and I agree, I'll remove the subscriptions to group discussions tonight. Except for the announcement group (this one). I'll also start work on a digest email feature that will group all your emails into a single daily notice.

I may be missing something, but what's up with the new love/yuk buttons? Looking on mobile version, I may be missing the explaination

It is there to give some feedback since a lot of folks just look and never comment. We have a lot of things coming that use these votes.

how could you tweak that to people - like myself - who are constantly traveling and looking for any events anywhere - not necessarily within a certain radius of somewhere they never are? i regularly travel across the country to events that i would have never even known about if someone from that area hadn't told me about it, even though i've got like a 500 mile radius set on events and castings.

Well right now I believe people are notified when you travel to their area (they should be, anyway). What you're asking for is the other way around, though. I think it's probably pretty simple... if you add a travel event to an area, we'll send all of the appropriate events/casting calls to you. Any new events or casting calls should also be added for preexisting travelers. If you think that would solve the issue, let me know and I'll get it done right away.
Good request. :)

With your new image voting feature, do you allow users to vote on their own images? Do you allow voting more than once on any one image? Would you consider adding a third vote button that is neutral in addition to like and dislike (LOVE IT! YUCK. NOT INTERESTED)?

If you're neutral, you shouldn't vote. Detweiler wanted to put in text that says that, but I thought it was implied. May have to revisit that one. Voting is only once per image. Right now people can vote on their own images, but we'll probably remove that capability in the future. Just some things to address with newly credited people (have to remove their existing votes as well) before that could be done.

How then do you distinguish neutral from not participating? I think it is not so much an issue of whether or not the meaning is implied but whether or not it is logical.

What's the point of recording a neutral vote on something? Facebook and Google+ don't have an "Indifferent" button. When you go to the polls you can't choose "Neither". Would it really be useful for you to know that 18 people had a neutral opinion of one of your photos?

As one example, it will give you a better measure of how much your feature is being used. If I look at an image and want to "vote" on it, but I neither like it nor dislike it, I have no option and you as the poll taker do not know whether I have an opinion about the image or I have just never even viewed it. Think of it this way - most of the images here are neither YUCK, nor LOVE IT, they are just average images. The question is whether or not you want to sort that out explicitly, or want to believe that is the implied consensus. With your scheme, believing that it is the implied consensus is indistinguishable from believing that most of the images are not even considered by viewers or maybe not even viewed. As for your concrete question, if I knew that 18 people cared enough to vote on my images, I would certainly use that information, and if they all voted neutral, I would probably use that to help sort out what images I want to keep posted and what images I want to remove. I suppose it is part depends on how you want to use this information that you are gathering. If it is just for fun, then keep it the way it is. If you want it to be statistically useful, I bet you will at some point wish you had provided the third option.

There are other uses we have planned for it and a neutral vote would be completely inconsequential for those as well. I'm pretty sure we're not going to change this unless Detweiler comes up with some application that requires those neutral votes. We do appreciate the feedback, though.

An average image neither deserves praise or ridicule, so neither vote would apply. I personally would find it annoying to have to indicate it was an average image when only an extreme is truly statistically interesting. I don't expect a vote on every image, so the plan is currently to just cover the top and bottom end of the quality metric. However, thanks for taking time to bring it up and keep on brainstorming!

11 months ago · Permalink Save yourself some frustration... take note of our DISCUSSION SUBSCRIPTIONS. I recently rewrote our entire commenting system to closely mirror the functionality of Facebook's system. The benefit of the new discussion system is that we can maintain it in one place and it updates across the entire site. This is especially useful when we need to add a feature or fix a bug, but it also makes your experience with the site more consistent (ie easier to understand).Look at the top of this discussion area. You'll see a checkbox that subscribes you to new comments. If you check that box, you'll get an email and site notice for NEW discussion threads only, not responses.
To get a response notification, you need to be the original author for that thread or have responded to it. For example, if @Cambriea responds to this new discussion, I'll get a notification. If @NatalieMorris then responds after that, both Cambriea and I would receive a notification. Subscribers would only get a notification for my initial post.
To make life easier on everyone, we automatically subscribe them to their portfolio, credited photos, groups (everyone is a member of our official groups), any contests they enter, and any awards they win. If you get annoyed by notifications for new comments in our official groups, just visit those groups and uncheck the subscribe button.
If you don't want to receive ANY notification emails, go to your control panel and uncheck the appropriate checkbox. You can also unsubscribe from specific types of email at the bottom of the email itself, but be aware that unsubscribing from all discussion emails means you'll not get an email if people post on any of your photos or portfolio.
What about those links on the thread? Permalink allows you to link directly to a specific thread. Reply allows you to respond to that thread (better than posting an entirely new discussion thread if you're responding to a specific comment). Delete removes your comment entirely (mods can remove ANY comment for violations, otherwise you can just remove your own or if you're the original poster you can remove the entire thread).
As always, if you think of an improvement to this system, please let us know.
